As North Texas prepares for the midterm elections, federal authorities have intervened in a case involving a threat against a local representative. The FBI has arrested a 17-year-old from McKinney who is accused of plotting to assassinate Representative Keith Self, a Republican seeking a third term to represent Texas' third congressional district. The congressman confirmed the development, stating that his campaign was notified of the situation via the U.S. Capitol Police on Oct. 6, following the suspect's arrest on Oct. 5.
Investigators have alleged that the teenager had been radicalized and was monitored by federal agents. The suspect reportedly intended to carry out a terrorist attack on behalf of ISIS, with the congressman identified as the target. The alleged plan was to strike during a chili cook-off fundraiser for veterans that took place on Oct. 17, an event that included former Cowboys players and other high-profile guests. The identity of the minor has not been released as the investigation continues.
In response to the intelligence regarding the arrest, Rep. Self said his team increased their vigilance and security measures as early voting commenced across the state. While acknowledging that he already maintained security protocols, the congressman stated, "So we did change our situational awareness around us." He added that his background in the military shaped his reaction to the news, noting, "Having deployed into combat zones several times, I'm happy it happened to me because people that have never dealt with this before tend to freak out when someone tells you that someone is trying to kill you."
Despite the alleged plot, Self confirmed that he proceeded with his schedule as planned, including judging chilies at the scheduled event and continuing his campaign activities such as poll greeting. He emphasized that while he has faced threats previously, "nothing has risen to the level of an arrest," distinguishing this incident from past concerns. His wife, a military spouse for 25 years, has also been taking the situation very seriously.
The arrest takes place against the backdrop of Rep. Self's recent legislative activities. In September, he introduced a nonbinding resolution denouncing the implementation of Sharia law in the United States and affirming the U.S. Constitution as the supreme law of the land. His congressional district encompasses McKinney, where local debates regarding a proposed mosque expansion have recently drawn significant public attention and led to an effort to recall city council members.
Evan Hunt, Self's opponent in the upcoming midterm election, has also addressed the situation, condemning the alleged assassination plot on social media. Federal authorities have not yet released additional details regarding the investigation.
